Tre’Quan Smith was getting ready for a summer of recruiting visits. One of the programs he planned to see was Virginia Tech, which planned to make him an offer if they liked what they saw in a workout.

Smith canceled those and other plans on Thursday when he gave a verbal commitment to UCF.

Village Academy coach Don Hanna said Smith, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound wide receiver who also considered Bowling Green and USF, told UCF coaches over the phone he was coming to Orlando next year.

“He’s been up there three times. He loves the campus and the football facility. He talks with the coaches at least twice a week,” Hanna said. “They have always been his number one and he didn’t see the reason to wait any longer. He talked it over with mom and she’s excited as well.”

As a junior, Smith led small school receivers in receiving yards (793) and touchdowns (9) on just 26 catches. A three-sport standout, he was a first-team All-Area wide receiver, made second-team All-Area as a forward on Village’s hoops team and was an All-Area honorable mention selection in track after finishing eighth in the 400 (51.70) at the Class 1A state meet.

Leon changes course: Former American Heritage tight end Isaac Leon, who on national signing day said he accepted a walk-on spot with Miami, is instead heading to Alabama. Heritage assistant coach Brad Tremper said Leon (6-5, 233) will walk-on with the Tide and may grey-shirt.
